Stamp Collecting for Beginners
Stamp collecting is one of the world's most popular hobbies, with
many sources indicating that at least 20 million people collect stamps
today. While serious stamp collecting hobbyists may require some
expensive supplies, most individuals who want to get into stamp collecting for beginners need only a few supplies.
A
stamp collection can begin with only a few stamps and a box or other
area to store them in. Stamp collecting for beginners often involves
cutting out interesting, rare or attractive stamps that you receive in
the mail. However, as time goes by, enthusiasts may decide that a
certain type of stamp is their favorite. Most commonly, collectors will
take interest in stamps from specific countries. Rare stamps from
certain countries can occasionally be very valuable. Choosing a topic
or theme, like holiday postage stamps, is generally the first step in collecting stamps for a stamp album.
Once
a topic has been chosen and a decent stamp collection has been started,
some real stamp collecting supplies can be purchased. Stamp tongs are
used to handle stamps, as their tips are designed to eliminate damage
to stamps. Oils from human skin can cause damage to stamps, where as
stamp tongs do not have this problem. Stamp albums
are fun ways to display and store your stamp collection. Generally,
there are two options to choose from when placing stamps into a stamp
album. Stamp hinges use mild gum coated to a non-toxic paper to mount stamps to a stamp book. Stamp mounts use
clear, non-toxic sleeves to mount to stamp albums. The latter are the
better choice for stamps in pristine condition, as stamp hinges will
leave some mark on the back of a stamp if the stamp is removed.
However, stamp mounts are more expensive. One final supply needed when
stamp collecting for beginners is a magnifying glass to allow you to better appreciate the artistry of the stamps in a collection.
