Stamp collecting is one of the most popular hobbies. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt started his stamp collection as a young child. He is called the Philatelic President. There is an image of him on a stamp using his tongs to place his stamps in his album.
FDR was president from 1933 to 1945. The stamps with Roosevelt’s image during the 1930s represent a time when Americans worked together to overcome great hardships. A stamp represents President Franklin Roosevelt fighting The Depression with The New Deal. Eight days after taking the office as the President, Franklin Roosevelt made his first “fireside chats.“ There is a stamp with his image at the microphone during his innovative “fireside chat.”
Franklin Delano Roosevelt passed away April 12, 1945. The United States paid tribute to him with four stamps in 1945. On May 15, 1947, Monaco issued a lavender stamp honoring FDR. Honduras did the same in 1947, and the Philippines also issued a stamp of FDR in 1947. The United States commemorated FDR’s 100th birthday with his image on a stamp in 1982.
During his Presidency he took time out his day to study his stamp collection. He was such an avid collector that he created his own stamp. The image of the stamp is a sketch with squiggles and dashes. The theme was to spread hope to Antarctica. The post office did publish the drawing on a three cent stamp using FDR’s design. It depicts Rear Admiral Richard Byrd flying over the South Pole.
