Stamps of Elvis

Are you old enough to remember the first stamps the United States published of Elvis? The entire country voted on whether the stamp should be of a young Elvis or of an older Elvis. The younger Elvis won, and in 1993 the United States issued a 29 cent stamp with Elvis singing into a mike on it. To date, the Elvis stamp is the most collected stamp in the United States, 124.1 million stamps were saved as compared to the closest competitor with 87.5 million.

The popularity of Elvis is not limited to the US. To celebrate his 25th anniversary, the countries of Liberia, Dominica, Paula, and Sierra Leone are issuing sheets of Elvis stamps. With the exception of Dominica, the sheets contain more than one picture of the King.

If you go online and Google "Elvis on Stamps" you will find a store that sells Elvis stamps from all over the world. In 2004 Gambia did a collection to celebrate the 70th anniversary of his birthday. St. Vincent has done 2 different stamps on Elvis. One for $1 that is a sheet of different pictures and one for $6 that is a tribute to Viva Las Vegas. Tributes to Elvis's movies were also the theme of a set of stamps from Antigua. Even Sweden has a stamp that pays tribute to the King.

It is not surprising the number of countries that have printed stamps of Elvis. Elvis was definitely one of a kind so it is only fitting that he should be remember with stamps.
